From world records to a breast cancer diagnosis, I share what freediving has taught me about finding calm, trusting myself and facing the unexpected.
WHAT THE WATER TAUGHT ME ABOUT LIFE
Freediving has taught me to notice when I’m holding tension, listen closely to my body and find calm in challenging moments. Those lessons helped me achieve two Guinness World Records - and became part of how I live.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2026, I found myself drawing on that same practice: returning to the present, staying in the moment, listening inward and accepting that I couldn’t control everything.
For me, surrender means meeting what is here, then choosing my next step with care.
These are the experiences I bring to my talks—an invitation to explore how we respond when life asks something unexpected of us.
THE THREE SEEDS
When life brought an unexpected “speed bump”, I found myself returning to three qualities I had been practising in the water.
They became a way to care for myself, listen deeply and take an active part in the decisions ahead.
Â
SOFTNESS
I can be soft in the water and out. I can meet myself with kindness, notice where I’m bracing and allow myself to soften—even when things feel uncertain.
AWARENESS
I can pay attention to my body, feelings and emotions. Making space to listen helps me recognise what I need and what questions I want to ask.
CONFIDENCE
I can trust that my voice matters. I can seek guidance, ask questions and make informed choices that honour my values.

WHAT AUDIENCES TAKE AWAY
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to bring these lessons into your life. Through stories, reflection and simple practices, I invite audiences to explore how to:
-
Find a pause under pressure—create space to respond with greater care.
-
Notice what’s happening within—recognise tension, emotions and habitual reactions.
-
Meet uncertainty with curiosity—ask “What can I learn?” when the next step isn’t clear.
-
Trust their own voice—ask questions, seek support and make choices that reflect their values.
-
Move forward with kindness—bring commitment to a challenge without turning against themselves.
A fresh perspective on meeting challenge—in work, relationships and everyday life.
MEET YOUR SPEAKER
Michaela (Miska) Werner
Freediver, coach, two-time Guinness World Record holder, mum of three and lifelong student of water. Based in Newcastle, Australia.
At 19, having spent my first ten years under communism, I left Slovakia for Australia —drawn to the ocean and the possibility of shaping my won life. That confidence has stayed with me—from travelling around Australia for a year with my young family to exploring what’s possible on a single breath.
That belief has also led me to two Guinness World Records: swimming 2,525 metres underwater without fins in one hour, and bringing together nine freedivers for a 98-kilometre, 24-hour no-fins relay. Both involved repeated breath-hold dives. As a coach, I help people develop their technique, confidence and self-awareness.
You cannot fight water. You cannot fight life.
My relationship with water has taught me to listen, soften and trust. These lessons shape how I train, how I coach, how I raise my children and how I meet the unexpected challenges of life.
I invite people to explore their own capacity for calm, awareness and self-trust—in the water and out.
After our 24-hour no-fins relay. Exhausted but determined.Â
98 kilometres, nine freedivers, one shared purpose.
